Proudly overlooking the western tip of the island, in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, the Phare des Baleines (Whale Lighthouse) is one of Ré's most iconic landmarks. Standing 57 meters tall, it offers a spectacular panorama of the island's north coast and the Pertuis Breton and Pertuis d'Antioche straits.

A true beacon for sailors and visitors alike, the Phare des Baleines, a listed historical monument, embodies all the wild beauty and grandeur of Île de Ré.
Like thousands of visitors each year, discover the Phare des Baleines, one of the most powerful lighthouses on the Atlantic coast with a range of 50 km.

And it's less than 30 minutes by car from the Hôtel Plaisir**** in Bois-Plage-en-Ré!

A dizzying climb and a breathtaking view of Ré

Climbing the 257 steps of the Phare des Baleines (Lighthouse of the Whales) is an experience not to be missed.
Once at the top, the reward is immediate: a 360° view of the ocean and the landscapes of Ré, between dunes, forests, and white villages with green shutters.
On a clear day, you can see the legendary Fort Boyard in the distance, its iconic silhouette rising from the waves.

Built between 1849 and 1853 to reinforce the old signal tower designed by Vauban, the lighthouse was inaugurated in 1854.
Next to it, the old tower, dating from 1682 and erected on the orders of Colbert, recalls the maritime origins of the area.
Its poetic and intriguing name comes from the many whales that once beached themselves on the nearby shores, giving this site a dimension that is both mythical and historical.
